Anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders are wreaking havoc in our schools and families (not to mention the amplification of these challenges if your child is neuro-diverse). Suicide and self harm are rising. And finding good help is increasingly challenging.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available. Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach a young person they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to help a young person to seek professional help or other supports.

Adults (18+) who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most. This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

Course Information:

  • 14-hour (2 day) Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course.
  • Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 October, 9.00am to 5.00pm (both days must be attended).
  • Cost $50 per participant including catering and MHFA manual (Please contact us if cost is a barrier to attending).
  • Provided by the Blue Leaf program in partnership with Investing in Our Youth and funded by Healthway.
  • Hosted at Koolambidi Woola (Bunbury Skate Park Function Room), City of Bunbury

Informed by the latest research in suicide prevention, Wesley LifeForce has developed a quality suite of suicide prevention training. Our suicide prevention training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to increase awareness of suicide in Australia, identify the signs that someone may be at risk of suicide and appropriate action to take. Effective interventions can make a real difference and save lives. Our programs aim at training individuals from all walks of life, as well as organisational groups. All Wesley LifeForce facilitators are accredited trainers and have completed suicide intervention training.

This workshop is focused on how to support young people who may be at risk of suicide and is aimed at those working in roles which support young Australians. Please note that this training is for people aged 18+.

Outcomes
– understand risk and protective factors
– how to identify the warning signs that someone may be at risk of suicide
– how to ask directly about suicide intent
– understand what local and national support and resources are available to support a person at risk

Ensuring Participant Safety
Our workshop material is specifically designed keeping participant’s safety in mind. The course material is vetted by MindFrame, an Australian Government body which provides expert advice to the suicide prevention sector on responsible reporting/portrayal of the issue of suicide.

The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury.

This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. 

This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

Course Information:

4-hour (1/2 day) Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course.

Saturday 22 June, 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

Cost $15 per participant including catering (Please contact us if cost is a barrier to attending).
