safeTALK is a half-day alertness workshop that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide alert helper. 

Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. Used widely by professionals and the general public, safeTALK-trained helpers recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach a young person they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to help a young person to seek professional help or other supports.

Adults (18+) who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

 

Course Information:

  • 14-hour (2 day) Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course.
  • Thursday 20th and 27th February, 9:00am to 5:00pm (must attend both days).
  • Dalyellup (venue details will be provided on registration)
  • Morning/Afternoon Tea provided (BYO lunch)
  • Cost $50

Unpacking the crisis in youth mental health

Our children are not ok. 

 

Latest national statistics indicate that mental health challenges are at an all-time high in Australian children and youth. Anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders are wreaking havoc in our schools and families (not to mention the amplification of these challenges if your child is neuro-diverse). Suicide and self harm are rising. And finding good help is increasingly challenging.

Our kids and our families are at breaking point.

 

How do we know if our kids will be ok? What can we do to support their mental health and resilience? What’s going wrong, and how do we fix it?

 

Join Dr Justin Coulson, Australia’s leading parenting expert, as he unpacks the mental health crisis enveloping our kids. He’ll cover:

The Conversations about Suicide course teaches participants how to recognise, understand and respond to a friend, family member, co-worker or other person, experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours. It is perfectly timed, one week before R U OK? Day, to increase your confidence to have meaningful conversations.

Course participants learn how to recognise and respond to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, provide support and encourage pathways to professional help. 

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

The Blue Leaf Initiative and Beyond Games & Hobby are collaborating for the very first “Roll for Panic Attack” event as part of WA Mental Health Week 2023.  The event is an opportunity for people new to role playing games to explore the benefits this hobby can have for them, supporting their mental health and connecting with a like-minded community.

A full day of gameplay broken up into two sessions including games suitable to newcomers to role playing games.

LEARN PRACTICAL FIRST AID SKILLS

  • Recognise common mental health problems in young people.
  • Provide initial help using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan
  • Seek appropriate professional help
  • Respond in a crisis situation

This is a 14-hour educational course, not a therapy or support group.

 

The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. This course is facilitated by a Psychologist with both professional and lived experience.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury.

This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

This FREE training is provided by funding from Healthway.
