The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach a young person they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to help a young person to seek professional help or other supports.

Adults (18+) who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.

Did you know? The LGBTQIA+ community are at an increased risk of suicide and self-harm. The 2020 roll out of the Private Lives 3 survey found that 41.9% of LGBTQIA+ participants had considered suicide within the last 12 months. This research also found that LGBTQIA+ young people are five times more likely to attempt suicide compared to the general population. 

Suicide Prevention Australia note that the LGBTQIA+ community are less likely to access help when experiencing a suicidal crisis and this is likely due to barriers faced by this group due to perceived and actual discrimination and stigma. 

In recognition of Trans Day of Visibility (31st March 2024) the St John of God Suicide Prevention Coordinators (funded by the Mental Health Commission) have teamed up with Living Proud to provide a free two hour workshop to the South West community on Suicide Prevention with an LGBTQIA+ focus. 

This workshop aims to increase your awareness of suicide prevention from an LGBTQIA+ lens and how you can provide support in this space.

Join us in Mental Health Week for the 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course. It is suitable for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury. This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.
