The Blue Leaf Initiative and Beyond Games & Hobby are collaborating for the very first “Roll for Panic Attack” event as part of WA Mental Health Week 2023.  The event is an opportunity for people new to role playing games to explore the benefits this hobby can have for them, supporting their mental health and connecting with a like-minded community.

A full day of gameplay broken up into two sessions including games suitable to newcomers to role playing games.

The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. This course is facilitated by a Psychologist with both professional and lived experience.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury.

This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury. This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

Equips adults (18+) with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand and respond to a friend, family member, co-worker, or another adult, experiencing a mental health issue or mental health crisis. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports. Adults who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders, equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

The RYDE program provides young people who are experiencing barriers to achieving their logbook hours the opportunity to complete their 50 hours of supervised driving experience with one of our Volunteer Mentors. If you’re aged 16 to 25 and are finding it hard to get experience behind the wheel, come down and chat to Raine.

Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention is a 2-day workshop designed for professionals and para-professionals in the human services whose roles bring them into regular contact with people at risk of suicide.

This workshop aims to help participants:

• Gain an understanding of the problem of suicide
• Identify suicide risk
• Provide a framework for risk assessment and intervention
• Develop appropriate intervention skills
• Understand the limits to confidentiality
• Understand the importance of consultation
• Gain an understanding of self-harming behaviour
• Gain an understanding of the link between mental disorders and suicidal behaviours
• Understand the importance of postvention

We acknowledge that attending a workshop that discusses suicide may bring up difficult and distressing emotions for people, especially for those who have been personally or professionally impacted by suicide. Therefore, we ask that you consider whether this is an appropriate time for you to attend a session before registering. Informed by the latest research in suicide prevention, Wesley LifeForce has developed a quality suite of suicide prevention training. Our suicide prevention training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to increase awareness of suicide in Australia, identify the signs that someone may be at risk of suicide and appropriate action to take. Effective interventions can make a real difference and save lives. Our programs aim at training individuals from all walks of life, as well as organisational groups. All Wesley LifeForce facilitators are accredited trainers and have completed suicide intervention training.

This workshop is focused on how to support young people who may be at risk of suicide and is aimed at those working in roles which support young Australians. Please note that this training is for people aged 18+.

– understand risk and protective factors
– how to identify the warning signs that someone may be at risk of suicide
– how to ask directly about suicide intent
– understand what local and national support and resources are available to support a person at risk

Ensuring Participant Safety
Our workshop material is specifically designed keeping participant’s safety in mind. The course material is vetted by MindFrame, an Australian Government body which provides expert advice to the suicide prevention sector on responsible reporting/portrayal of the issue of suicide.
